Our historical roots date back to when the Squibb Corporation was marketing a dental bandage that maintained its stickiness on warm, moist surfaces. At the time, people with an ostomy were forced to use irritating substances like rubber cement and adhesive tape to secure their ostomy pouches to their bodies. In addition to causing skin allergies and being uncomfortable, these substances were often unreliable. Thus, a worldwide need was identified, and our reputation for making a difference in people’s lives began in 1978, when ConvaTec was formed as a separate division of E.R. Squibb and Sons, Inc. to market the hydrocolloid ostomy skin barrier (Stomahesive® Skin Barrier) and the world’s first two-piece disposable pouching system (now called SUR-FIT®). These products provided a level of comfort, security, and skin protection never before available. They also gave people with an ostomy new freedom and peace of mind.
